China proposes resumption of 6-partty talks

China has proposed an emergency meeting of the chief delegates to the six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear issue. The move comes amid joint US-South Korea military drills to deter further provocation from North Korea.

China's special envoy in charge of Korean Peninsula issues, Wu Dawei, made the proposal on Sunday. He proposed that the chief representatives of the member countries of the six-party talks meet in Beijing in early December to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Japan, South Korea and the US are taking a cautious stance on resumption of the six-party talks. Wu sought their understanding, saying the discussions in Beijing would not be resumption of the talks though they would use the same format.

Wu and Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo proposed the meeting to South Korean President Lee Myung Bak in Seoul on Sunday.

In Beijing, it has been confirmed that a vehicle used by the North Korean ambassador to China entered the Chinese foreign ministry on Sunday. NHK's correspondent says it seems that China explained the proposal to the North Korean side.

Xinhua News Agency says Dai spoke with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the phone, and told her that they should deal with the situation through discussion.

China is expected to approach the countries concerned to find common ground.
